Chanukah
Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a significant Jewish holiday observed for eight nights and days, usually falling in December. The holiday commemorates the miraculous victory of the Maccabees, a Jewish rebel army, over the Syrian-Greek oppressors in the 2nd century BCE. Central to the celebration is the lighting of the menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum, with an additional candle lit each night. Other customs include playing traditional games with a spinning top called a dreidel and indulging in foods fried in oil, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts). Chanukah serves as a time for families to come together, share festive meals, exchange gifts, and reflect on the enduring message of hope, resilience, and the triumph of light over darkness.
