Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration observed mainly by African Americans from December 26th to January 1st. Established by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, Kwanzaa spans a week and highlights African heritage while emphasizing principles like unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Families gather each day to light candles on the Kinara, a seven-branched candleholder. Throughout the week, individuals exchange meaningful gifts, engage in artistic expressions, and contemplate shared values and history. Kwanzaa serves as a dedicated time for communities to rejoice and reinforce the significance of togetherness, self-improvement, and cultural appreciation.
